These are a type of glass/plastic having higher refractive index. They are recommended for high power prescriptions in order to reduce the thickness of the lenses. This is particularly more effective in high minus, where it reduces the thickness of the lens and proportionately the weight compared to an ordinary glass / plastic lens of the same power. It further enhances the cosmetic look by largely eliminating the peripheral concentric rings present in high minus powers.
A minus lens in Hi-Index with Anti-Reflection coating can really make your spectacles feel like as though you are wearing a frame with no lenses. The Lens looks absolutely inconspicuous. Hi-Index lenses are available in clear white glass and plastic, tinted glass and plastic , photo-chromatic glass and plastic versions.
