WHAT IS ASTIGMATISM?

Astigmatism is an optical defect that occurs when the front surface of the eye (the Cornea), which ideally should be perfectly round like a baseball,  becomes elongated like a rugby ball. This distortion will interfere with the way light focuses in the eyes, thereby distorting vision.
Astigmatism is not a disease, but merely a simple optical defect. The diagram below illustrates how astigmatism distorts our vision by breaking light up into 2 foci.
