AstigmatismWHAT IS ASTIGMATISM? Astigmatism is an optical defect that occurs when the front surface of the eye (the Cornea), which ideally should be perfectly round like a baseball, becomes elongated like a rugby ball. This distortion will interfere with the way light focuses in the eyes, thereby distorting vision. Astigmatism is not a disease, but merely a simple optical defect. The diagram below illustrates how astigmatism distorts our vision by breaking light up into 2 foci.
Lenses used to correct astigmatism (spectacle lenses or contact lenses) must be specially designed.
Contact Lenses prepared to correct Astigmatism are more sophisticated than normal soft contact lenses because they are designed to correct astigmatism and provide stable vision. When do I require Toric lenses? Normal (Spherical) soft contact lenses are designed to correct short sightedness only. They can however mask (or correct) slight amounts of Astigmatism. However, if you have Astigmatism greater than 0.75 diopters, normal (spherical) soft contact lenses may not be able to give you sharp vision. Only specially designed soft contact lenses called TORIC TORIC lenses will be able to provide optimum vision. How do Toric lenses differ from normal (spherical) soft lenses? Toric soft lenses are specially designed and manufactured to incorporate a correction for Astigmatism. This additional parameter incorporated into the Toric lens will mean that it will take slightly longer for our practitioner to fit compared to normal (spherical) soft contact lenses.
