Spectacle Lenses
A minus lens in Hi-Index with Anti-Reflection coating can really make your spectacles feel like as though you are wearing a frame alone. The Lens looks absolutely inconspicuous. Hi-Index lenses are available in clear white glass/plastic/polycarbonate, tinted glass/plastic/polycarbonate and photo-chromatic glass/plastic/polycarbonate versions.
Anti-Reflection Coating
The Anti-Reflection (A.R) coating is a transparent film coated on the surfaces of ophthalmic lenses to combat glare from reflecting sources at working place and the dazzle from the head lights of oncoming vehicles while driving at night.

Ophthalmic Lenses
The materials used to manufacture Ophthalmic Lenses can be broadly classified into:
*Glass
*CR39 (Plastic Lenses)
*Polycarbonate (Mid-Index Lenses)
Glass Lenses
Glass lenses are available in White, Pink and Photo-chromatic (Grey and Brown). Glasses are heavier compared to CR39 lenses. The risk of breakage is also very high in the case of glass lenses.
CR-39 (Plastic Lenses)
As mentioned earlier, plastic lenses are much lighter than conventional glass lenses. Thus, making it more cosmetically appealing and lighter on your face. This means you won’t have those ugly nose pad marks on either side of your nose. More importantly, they are more durable than glass that is they won’t break easily.
NOTE: All CR39 lenses have an inbuilt scratch resistant coating and they are also available as High Index lenses.
Polycarbonate
Poly carbonate lenses are 30% lighter than traditional plastic lenses. The lightness gives you greater comfort and you feel as if your not wearing any lenses at all. Polycarbonate lenses are more impact resistant than standard plastic lenses. They can withstand shock like, falling off a motorbike, much more easily. Optimal scratch resistance is attained when anti-reflective coating is applied to the lenses. Also ultraviolet rays are dangerous to your eyes. For this reason polycarbonate lenses provide 100% protection against harmful UVA and UVB radiation. Due to their extraordinary thinness, Polycarbonate lenses are perfectly suited for lightweight, discrete frames and ideal for kids, because of the impact resistance and UV protection. It is also ideal lens material for Rimless and Semi-Rimless frames.
High-Index Lenses
These are a type of glass/plastic having higher refractive index. They are recommended for high power prescriptions in order to reduce the thickness of the lenses. This is particularly more effective in high minus, where it reduces the thickness of the lens and proportionately the weight compared to the ordinary glass of the same power. It further enhances the cosmetic look by largely eliminating the peripheral concentric rings present in high minus powers.
The A.R. coating is also available in high power glasses especially minus where it enhances the cosmetic value of the spectacles:
Lenses without antireflection coating transmits only 92% of light through the lens and the remaining 8% is reflected. With Anti-reflection coating, the transmission can be increased to 99% from 85%, thus improving the clarity of vision and eliminating ghost images of objects viewed.
Advantages
*Eliminating reflections
*Filter out Ultra-violet light.
*Makes your glass lens inconspicuous and hence more attractive.
*Reduces eye fatigue in office and under artificial light.
*Helps avoid glare during night driving from an oncoming car headlight.
Photo-Chromatic Lenses
These lenses change color depending on the environment they are in. When the lenses are directly exposed to UV light (Sunlight), they change color and become dark. When they are brought indoors, they automatically change from dark to clear white lenses. When they are dark, they give the effect of wearing sunglasses. These are available for glass lenses only. They are available in grey and brown.
Transitions
These are color changeable lenses available for CR-39 (plastic) lenses. Transition lenses are clear indoors, They achieve even greater indoor clarity when combined with an anti-reflective coating. They are comparable to sunglasses in bright sunglasses and tint mildly in indirect sunlight. In high temperatures, they offer the darkest outdoor performance of all variable tint lenses. When the light changes, they are the fastest adjusting lenses, so you always see clearly and comfortably. These lenses block 100% of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays and are scratch-resistant. Transition lenses are up to 50% lighter in weight than glass. Transition plastic lenses are more impact resistant than glass. They are available in two shades: grey and brown.
